Vegetable Musical Instruments

A NHK TV program ( 未来観測つながるテレビ@ヒューマン ) introduced a hot Internet topic - a man in Okayama Prefecture makes vegetable musical instruments. He uploads lots of short movies of himself and his family playing special instruments made of cattots, pumpkins and Japanese radishes "Daikon".

He says," The process of making vegetable instruments is very enjoyable.Deciding where and how many holes I should drill and playing are vibrantly exciting.
The tune of the vegetables changes as time goes on, because fresh vegetablse easily wither." He adds ,"The Internet is useful to keep alive memories of short-lived vegetable instruments and to show them to people all over the world."

He appeared live in the studio with several wind instruments, such as a carrot ocarina, a sweet potato flute, etc. I was surprised by the tune, which was more beautiful than I had expected. The instruments looked easier to play than the trumpet and the clarinet. He ad libed Beethoven's Ninth Symphony with TV hosts.

In the last scene of the TV program, he enjoyed dinner with his family. The menu was curry and rice. The ingredients were the instruments used
a couple of hours ago. He says," MOTTAINAI."

I worte this from memory. So I apologize for any inaccuracies.

Golden Week Leads Me Outdoors

In Japan, we have Golden Week, which is a succession of national holidays from April 29th to May 5th. Many Japanese take a trip or go shopping. However, I have special feeling about Golden Week, because the snow is gone by this time. Golden Week moves my active field from indoors to outdoors.

When I was in elementary school, I could ride on a bicycle from the end of April. School put a ban on the use of bicycles untill the snow melted completely, so my friends and I looked forward to the opening of bicycle season. We used to play tag around town by bicycle. We rode bicycles to go hanting for frogs and salamanders in distant pounds and mountains. We used to ride bicycles all day feeling spring breeze.

After getting a driver's licence, I used to go driving to the sights. Amusement parks or tourist roads usually open at the beginning of May. I went to Rusutsu resort with my friends to go on a new roller coaster. Watching a night view, I drove to Hakodate with my girlfriend. My family and I took a trip to Kushiro Marsh in east of Hokkaido. We do not need to be careful about snowfall and icyroads. Therefore, we can drive easily and safely.

While I was working in Sapporo, I used to go out to see cherry blossoms at Maruyama park with my co-workers. Cherry blossoms are in full boloom at the beginning of Golden Week. We used to cook Genghis-Kham nabe and drink too much. Some people did Karaoke and some people sang songs loudly without Karaoke. Sitting in a circle, we really let our hair down at Hanami party. Cold beer was especially delicious in the warm sunshine.

In conclusion, Golden Week brings me a change of seasons from winter to spring. In Japan, new things start in April, so people get accustomed to new life at this time of Golden week. I always become more avtive or positive and feel refreshed after Golden Week.

英語ミニエッセイ 「 Who are housewives ? 」

Who are Housewives ?

When you fill out an application form, you usually have to to answer a question:What is your occupation? Can you guess the answer of housewives who have their own job? Most of them do not check the blank box for housewives. These days, " housewives" is oneof the hardest words to define.

The wemen like those above tend to say that they are office workers. Of course, many of them deal with household chores, such as shopping, washing and cleaning. They play the role of housewife at home undoutbtedly, they, however, want to give precedence to social status.

Generally speaking, the image of housewives is women in their twenties to fifties. Actually, women beyond their fifties sometimes say, "I am a housewife." It is those who are parents of Dink or Dewks couples. In their households, many young women and young mothers leave the role of housewifeto thier mothers or grandmothers ( mather in law ) and concentrate on working.

In addition, the appearance of men who are full-time househasbands has made the definition more complicated. They do not use the word of "househusband" as much as women having full-time jobs. They have a tendency to hide the fact that they are full-time househasbands, because they may have guilty consciences.

Finally, modern society has created various types of hosewives. Therefore,it is very difficult to drew a clear line between housewives and non-housewives. Let me ask you one more question : What kind of people should be categorized to housewives?

Dink : Double [ Dual ] income no kids
日本語では、DINKS,Dinks (ディンクス)というが、英語表記は Dink
Dewks : Dual-employed with kids / Dually employed with kids
英語では、あまり一般的ではないみたい。

Metabo Beat Camp in Yubari

A conbined health and sightseeing tour was held in Yubari city, Hokkaido Prefecture from October 8th to 10th, which was called "Metabo Beat Camp in Yubari". Tobu Travel Agency in Tokyo organized the tour in order to cheer up the municipality under rehabilitation. Fourteen people joined the tour.

On the first day, tourists took physical checkups and learned metabolism. They walked around a cool mine museum and the location used for the movie of"Year One in the North". During their walk, they had ski stocks. Ski stock walking made their arms swing wider, which can burn internal body fat effectively.

On the second day, the beat camp members went digging for coal. They picked up the ground with pickaxes under the open sky. And then they cooked a mushroom hot pot with fresh local vegetables, using the coal that they had mined as fuel.

On the last day, the paticipants got personal counseling about training programsto follow at home. A woman from Saitama Prefecture said," I had a great time here.I want the travel agency to organize more events like this".

Nice ideas like Metabo Beat Camp will really help Yubari beat its financial problems. I hope the city will returu to full strength as soon as possible.
